We hope you are enjoying a relaxing summer and that if you have been abroad on holiday, you had a great one!
We would like to invite you to join our 2008 autumn programme, celebrating international culture and creative writing from around the world. Our events cover a range of themes from business, travel and domestic reality to heritage, history, ethnicity, walking and poetry and they run from 29th September to 5th October 2008. Here are the highlights:
2008 PROGRAMME
An Evening in the Den with Theo Paphitis of Dragons’ Den fame
Mon 29 Sep, The Opera House, Boscombe, Time and price to be confirmed
Our headline event at the Opera House, Bournemouth’s eclectic venue will be followed by a business networking event with business magnate, Theo Paphitis. Theo will read and sign his autobiography Enter the Dragon that charts his boyhood travel from Cyprus to tea boy with Lloyds of London to successful business turnarounds with Ryman the stationer and La Senza lingerie chains.
Fuck: A Human Odyssey with Martin Rowson
Tue 30 Sep, 6.30pm, Boscanova, 650 Christchurch Road, Boscombe BH1 4BP
Laugh, listen and look at award-winning political cartoonist Martin Rowson’s visual story of Earth, from the Big Bang to 9/11 and The End of The World in 67 beautiful, savage and splendid satirical images all with one word captions. Martin’s cartoons appear regularly in the Guardian, Independent on Sunday, the Daily Mirror and The Spectator.
Multicultural Perspective Poetry Reading with Louisa Adjoa Parker
Wed 1 Oct, 2pm, (Venue to be confirmed) Bournemouth
West Dorset writer and poet Louisa Adjoa Parker and founder of the Black History in Dorset Project will discuss how her mixed race heritage and domestic experiences informs her writing.
A Blessing in Disguise - a humorous domestic romance
Wed 1 Oct, 2pm, (Venue to be confirmed) Bournemouth
Poole-based romance novelist, Pam Fudge tells the turbulent the story of Alex Siddons who discovers she is pregnant after 25 years in a childless marriage.
Federico Garcia Lorca Appreciation with Suzannah Spencer-George
Thu 2 Oct, 2pm, Venue: ETC International College, Bournemouth
This famous poet and dramatist is key in the canon of Spanish literature and we are delighted that Suzannah will bring him to life in a moving retrospective that celebrates his life and works.
International Story Writing Workshop with Mary Sharnhorst
Thu 2 Oct, 6.30pm, Venue: ETC International College, Bournemouth
A workshop aimed for international students of English intermediate level and above that begins with writing a ghost story from the participant’s culture and ends in the award of a prize for the winner.
Quotable quotes panel quiz with Brian Jenner and notable VIPs
Fri 3 Oct 2008, 7 pm, All Fired Up Café, Bournemouth town centre
Effervescent creative entrepreneur, Brian Jenner, will host a “Quotable quotes panel quiz” featuring a panel of VIPs that will test their competitive streaks.
”A Slice of Apple Pie”
Sat 4 Oct, 11.00 am, Ink Bar, Print Room, Richmond Hill, Bournemouth
Local writer and editor Julie Musk was living happily in Frampton near Dorchester , when her husband’s job uprooted the family and took them to the States for two years. In this book, she describes the family’s experience of moving from Dorset to Ohio and passes on exclusive first-hand knowledge about life in the great US of A. Reading and signing session.
”Selling your Father’s Bones” a Wild West Travelogue with Brian Schofield
Sat 4 Oct, 12.30 pm, Ink Bar, Print Room, Richmond Hill, Bournemouth
Continuing on the travelling theme, Brian Schofield, former editor Sunday Times Travel magazine will feature “Selling your Father’s Bones”, his Wild West travelogue and adventure story of the 1877 Exodus of the Nez Pearce Native American Indians and offer travel writing tips.
Literary Heritage Walks are a constant feature of the festival and this year we are also exploring Berlin with Sandra Payne’s presentation on Literary Walks Around Berlin on Fri 3 Oct at 2 pm at All Fired Up Café. Our regular two-hour Bournemouth Literary Heritage Walk with Bournemouth guide & historian John Walker will start on Sun 5 Oct at 2 pm beginning at St Peter’s Church in Hinton Road, £3.50 per person.
Your own world of words - an interactive poetry performance with Keith Bennett
Sun 5 Oct, 3.30 pm, Venue to be confirmed
Keith is the pioneer of “a poem and a pint” soirees throughout the South West and you must not miss this infectious poetry performance.
And finally, our programme ends with a Multi Media Poetry Performance and World Music Party featuring Collum Regan on Sun 5 October, 5pm at ETC International College in West Hill Road, Bournemouth.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST WE HAVE THREE MORE ADDITIONAL EVENTS IN COLLABORATION WITH THREE EMBASSIES:
* A poetry performance with Velta Snikere supported by the Latvian Embassy
* An event with leading Croatian playwright Tena Stivicic, supported by the Croatian Embassy.
* A calligraphy demonstration by Umon Tachibana, supported by the Japanese Embassy.
