Boscombe has been successfully awarded £455,000 through the Government’s Sea Change programme aimed to regenerate the area by linking culture and heritage in a way which restores pride in the whole community.

Creative illuminations linking Sea Road and Boscombe Precinct, purpose built accessible beach huts designed by local artists, as well as enhanced wheelchair access on the seafront are just a number of ideas being explored for the Boscombe programme.

Secured by Bournemouth Borough Council the programme will be rolled out of over the next year and will see major investment in Boscombe by widening the benefits of the seafront regeneration scheme and essentially bring long term benefits to the heart of the Boscombe community.

Councillor Stephen MacLoughlin, Leader of Bournemouth Borough Council, said; “We are delighted to have been granted this funding.  Using art and culture, this programme is essential for widening the benefits of the seafront regeneration into the heart of Boscombe. There are a number of exciting projects being explored which will aim to enhance the appearance of the area, creating a more user friendly and attractive ambience and encourage visitors who come to the beach to also venture up Sea Road and explore Boscombe.”  He added, “This programme will improve the whole Boscombe environment and encompasses community involvement, accessibility and economic improvement, and will ensure that the wealth created on the seafront impacts on the wider community.  I would like to thank everyone involved in making the successful application to continue regeneration in Boscombe.”

Andrew Emery, Seafront Development Officer said; “This is a groundbreaking programme aimed to improve our seaside resort through the use of culture and heritage, and is about restoring pride in our much-loved resort.  We will work closely with local groups including disability groups to ensure that we meet the needs of the community, for example, one of the projects will be to look at beach accessibility including the creation of fully accessible beach huts.”  He added; “Our application demonstrated impressive proposals and the judges were particularly pleased on how we are recapturing creativity which will hopefully inspire other resorts to follow.”
