BackCare Awareness Week (10th-16th October 2009)

Posted on Friday, 09 October 2009 11:42AM by

BackCare Awareness Week is an annual event run by the charity BackCare and its partners to raise awareness of back pain and the issues surrounding it, including prevention and treatment.

Back pain is the second most common cause of absence from work in the UK, with over four million working days lost to the condition every year. On average, an employee with back pain takes 17 days to recover from an episode, with the cost to employers estimated at £600m every year. Back pain can severely impact someone’s ability to do their job, although work may not have necessarily caused the back pain in the first place.

The theme for this year’s awareness week is ‘Work it Out – Managing and Preventing Back Pain at Work’. The Boscombe-based Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) will be supporting this campaign, offering free advice to local businesses at the New Business Matters Open Exhibition at AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday 14th October.

Exercise demonstrations will be given, showing simple methods to help reduce neck, back and shoulder pain. Information on back health and general wellbeing will also be provided.

The AECC is keen to extend practical advice on back pain avoidance to individuals as well as businesses and recently launched a free consultation service. These consultations have also been designed to advise individuals on chiropractic’s use in treating particular conditions. Consultations, which must be booked in advance, are available between 10:30am and 11am every weekday at the AECC’s state-of-the-art clinic, with each appointment lasting around 15 minutes.
