Welcome to Boscombe Children's Centre, a centre for children and families who live in the Boscombe and Springbourne area. We work together with local groups and services to make sure we are meeting the needs of families and children in the area.
New Reception, Office and Multi-Sensory Room
We have made a lot of changes to the children’s centre over the past few months, so thank you to all of our centre users for bearing with us while the work was underway.
The reception area has been improved with a new desk and automatic doors which make it easier for you to get in and out with buggies and baby carriers.
The staff are settling into the new office behind reception which is taking up the space where the Multi-Sensory Room used to be.
The Multi-Sensory Room has been moved and is now located at the back of the Activities Room.
The room has been revamped and is designed to be a relaxing and stimulating space away from every day life and an area that is fascinating to both children and adults.
Equipment includes a bubble tube, relaxing music, projector with a range of projection wheels, soft flooring, fibre optics, a cloud and star ceiling, flashing balls, flexible toys and lots more.
Family Trips
We arranged 3 family trips over the summer holiday this year, which were very popular with our families and everyone had a great time. Our first trip in July was to Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary in the New Forest was a great success and we needed two coaches to get us all there! Luckily the sun shone and the children kept themselves busy building dens in the forest and playing games with the parachute.
The children delighted in watching the deer all huddled together in the enclosure. Some families enjoyed a walk around the enclosure but some brave explorers went further into the forest! Luckily we saved them their picnic lunch. On the return journey we had lots of very tired grown ups and children!
Feedback from the families was very positive and we hope to run similar trips to this one in the future. If you have any Ideas of possible venues then please let a member of staff know.
Next, we visited the Dinosaur Encounter at the BIC where we stepped back in time and saw animated Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceraptops, and many other dinosaurs. Everyone was amazed at how lifelike it all was and we had a really good day.
Volunteering
If you have some spare time and would like to work as a volunteer we’d love to hear from you. We have lots of opportunities for volunteers to work
as part of the children’s centre team. We can offer you training and provide a reference if you choose to apply for jobs later on. Please ask at reception for details or speak to Lynn Bourne.
Bournemouth Healthy Early Years - ‘HEY’
This term we are looking at our practice and our environment in preparation for gaining Accreditation for ‘HEY’.
This scheme aims to encourage Early Years Settings to provide an environment which will
encourage healthy lifestyles in the under 5’s and support parents. One area of focus is to promote an awareness and understanding of healthy eating .
As part of our commitment to promote healthy eating and choice we have introduced a new healthy snack menu. We give the children frequent opportunities to explore healthy eating within the curriculum.
During our healthy snack times the children have enjoyed trying hummus and pitta breads, vegetable sticks, seasonal fruits, guacamole, tuna dip, different cheeses and selections of cold meats. Stories that we have used to explore food
and healthy eating include ‘Handa’s Surprise’ ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’ and ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’.
Our ‘We Can Cook’ programme links in well with our Involvement with; HEY’ allowing children and parents/ carers to learn together how to prepare and cook a variety of menus. This term we have been cooking bread, pasta, cheesecake, carrot cake, cheese straws and bread and butter pudding.
Free Wi-Fi
The children’s centre will soon be a WiFi hotspot so you will be able to bring your own laptop to use in our café area, or you can borrow one from reception.
Look out for further details during September.
