Boscombe families launch map of local cycling and walking routes

Posted on Friday, 20 November 2009 05:10PM by Lisa Northover

Families from Boscombe Children’s Centre have created a map showing all the good cycling and walking routes in the Boscombe and Springbourne area.

The new map, produced in partnership with Sustrans, the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity, will be launched at a cycle and footpath safety event at Boscombe Children’s Centre on Wednesday 25 November from 1pm to 2.30pm. All local families are invited to attend.

Boscombe Children’s Centre Manager, Lynn Bourne, said: ‘We have been working closely with Sustrans this year to help encourage local families to consider walking and cycling as a healthy and environmentally friendly alternative to driving. The main problem seemed to be that families didn’t feel safe enough to walk or cycle on our busy roads and were unsure of the areas with cycle lanes and appropriate footpaths.”

At the event, families will have the chance to meet the local Sustrans’ Bike It Officer and try out a balance bike, which helps the rider learn balance and steering. Dorset Police will be on hand to give advice on keeping bikes safe and secure and the Council’s road safety officers will be there with road safety advice and giveaways. In addition, families can take part in a buggy walk around Kings Park.

Elisabeth Roberts, Sustrans Project Officer, added: “When we choose to get about on foot or by bike there are often better options or shortcuts to the busy main road. This map is a great way to find safer and more attractive routes for many of our everyday journeys, whether it's to a playground, to the Children's Centre, to the shops or to visit family and friends."

Louisa Lindsay-Clarke, who cycles with both of her children, was one of a number of parents who helped create the map. She said, “It was good to be asked directly about what it is that parents and children need locally to encourage walking and cycling. Being involved with the actual creation of the map and seeing the finished article gave us a real sense of achievement and community”.

The map is free and will be available to all local families in an A4 full colour, folded leaflet from Boscombe Children’s Centre from 25 November. For more information contact the Children’s Centre on 01202 395534.
