Spotlight on Accessibility consultation:
Some key aspirations for accessible beach hut facilities, identified in recent consultation forum with disabled beach users:
• Improvements to accessible parking bays, drop kerbs and crossing points in front of beach hut development & provision of ‘drop off point’. (work scheduled to commence 27th April).
• Agreement on beach access trackway. (Currently seeking planning permission with view to install by Summer 2009).
• Accessible public toilet next to ‘Coasters’ to feature shower & changing bed (design being developed)
• Key elements to include within accessible beach hut design brief:
o Spacious inside & out
o Built to last
o Fitted with easy to operate windbreaks & sunshades
o Double door level entry access
o Lots of natural light inside
o Strong colour / tonal contrast
o Retractable partition walls between huts to allow for flexible use of space for small & large group use
o Adjustable height facilities inside
o To be made available for short term use & reduced hire charge if possible (note: this point is a matter for discussion with Seafront Management)
• Tactile signage & better demarcation between edge of promenade and sea wall slope down to beach.
(Draft beach hut design brief to be consulted upon with internal partners next week and presented to Stakeholders Board meeting following week.)
Other news:
Precinct lighting scheme: 6 property owners so far signed up to the scheme and agree in principal to permit lighting on their properties.
Draft artist briefs for other elements of project currently being consulted upon with internal partners.
