Boscombe Underground celebrates its first month of trading

Posted on Friday, 03 July 2009 04:00PM by Lisa Northover

Saturday 3 July marks a small milestone for Boscombe Underground, as it celebrates the completion of its first month of trading.

The indoor alternative market, based at 501-507 Christchurch Road in Boscombe has enjoyed successful start to trading, with 14 of its 21 market stalls now occupied by small local businesses. With more stalls confirmed to open in July, the market is quickly gaining a reputation as being ‘Dorset’s answer to Camden Market’.

Boscombe Underground is the brain child of entrepreneur Ruth Little, who recognised the potential for an alternative market in Boscombe when she moved to the area from Scotland six years ago. Her vision was to offer shoppers a real alternative to the mundane British High Street, which seems to be made up of the same chain stores present no matter what town or city you are in. Ruth also wants to bring the spirit of areas like Camden in London and The Laines in Brighton to Boscombe, which already has an alternative reputation.

Early signs are good. Stall holders selling vintage clothing, hand made jewellery, records, children’s clothing and much more at the market have received many complements for the quality and price of their alternative goods. Sales are ticking over and visitors to Boscombe Underground are amazed at the diversity of product available at the indoor market.

Ruth’s ultimate aim is to revolutionise the shopping experience in Boscombe and for the area itself to become known for its thriving alternative market. She is very happy at what Boscombe Underground has achieved in its first month.

“I’m thrilled with the early success of Boscombe Underground and have many people to thank for that,” says Ruth. “Firstly, I want to pay tribute to Bournemouth Council who have been so supportive in me setting up this business as have the Boscombe Traders Association. I’m overwhelmed with response from local traders in terms of wanting to set up here and also the complements we’ve had from our fantastic customers.”

Boscombe Underground is located next to Argos on 501-507 Christchurch Road in Boscombe. The indoor market is open Tuesday-Saturday 9.30am-5pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm.
