Fun Run Your Way to Fitness

Posted on Wednesday, 09 June 2010 03:38PM by lisa Northover

As summer is snapping at our heels, it is time to really assess your fitness.

Many of us set fitness goals at New Year then don't really think about it again until the thought of squeezing into a swimming costume becomes unbearable or having to get the upper arms out in a summer dress.

The best way to make sure you stick to your training is make yourself accountable.

How?       Book an event!

It gives you some motivation and a solid reason for getting out of bed and jogging before work or going to the gym before coming home from work. Better yet enter with a friend and encourage each other.

Body in Motion is sponsoring a 5km run 18th July 2010 starting at Boscombe Pier in support of Dorset Blind Association.

The run is a fun run- so there is no pressure to do a certain time. You can run, jog or walk the event as long as you do your best so it is perfect for those who have not run for a while.

But if you are an accomplished runner feel free to enter and beat your personal best 5km time!

Running is an activity that we can all do. Once you have a pair of trainers, it is largely free,

There are no expensive memberships required. We all instinctively know how to run- admittedly some better than others. But unlike badminton, swimming, Pilates or karate, we do not need to spend a year having lessons to understand how to do it.

The benefits of running are simply to immense to ignore:

  • The obvious one: weight loss
  • Stronger bones, joints, muscles and tendons
  • Psychological relief- de stress, feel good endorphins
  • Improved cardiovascular system
  • Gain more energy
  • Prevent heart disease, diabetes, stroke
  • Enormous sense of accomplishment
  • Social

Some Training Tips

For those just starting out, start slow. Start with 20 minutes walk/jog. Alternate between the two. Do this 3 times a week until you can jog the whole 20 minutes without walking at all.

Each week add on a couple of minutes to the length of your run.

Remember to stretch after training and it is a good idea to add some core strength exercises to the end of each session.

Do not run 2 days in a row and if you have any niggling injuries, please seek help at Body in Motion sports physio and sports massage.

Run details: 5km  Sunday 18th July, 9am Boscombe Pier

£5 entry, £2.50 children (£10 on the day)

There is no minimum sponsorship but we are asking you to raise as much as you can to make a difference to the lives of visually impaired people in Dorset
