January 2011
Welcome back from the Christmas Holidays! We hope you all had lots of fun with your family and friends. My name is Shaz Hill - you may have seen me on front desk recently. I am the new receptionist and have to say I’m really enjoying myself. I first came to the centre as a parent to Let’s Play and went to Ann’s Workshops and Frankie, the Family Support Worker, helped me as a parent. I started working at the centre as a volunteer in August 2010 and have been appointed as the new receptionist. It will be the first job I have had since having my little boy & my little girl. I have found the experience really refreshing and hope I can be of help to you as part of the centre’s team.
STOP PRESS!!! Changes to Baby Clinics at the Centre From January 2011, Monday Baby Clinics will be stopping and Thursday Baby Clinics will be on for ½hr longer from 1.00 – 3.00 pm. The clinic is aimed at local parents to ask health visitors for advice and tips. Please see the article “How often should I weigh my baby?” below.
How often should I weigh my baby? After the early days, and as long as all is well, it is recommended that babies up to the age of 12 months are weighed no more than once a month. After this it is recommended that they are weighed no more than every 3 months, unless there are special reasons. Many parents like to have their babies weighed more often than this but this is not always helpful, and can cause unnecessary worry! Your health visitor may suggest that your child is weighed more often if there are concerns about their health or growth.

Children with Special Educational Needs Hi my name is Hazee and I am the Special Educational Needs Coordinator, or SENCO for short, here at Boscombe Children’s Centre. If you have any concerns with regards to your child or if your child has been diagnosed with a Special Educational Need (SEN), then we can offer you and your family support ranging from referrals to agencies such as Speech and Language Therapists to helping you find a nursery place.
All of our activities can be adapted to meet the needs of children aged 0-5 years. We are planning a new Stay & Play for children with SEN in the new year, so if you have any ideas or suggestions about what you would like to see in the group or other services at the centre, I would love to hear from you. You can contact me on 395534 or 07827 954839.
Don’t struggle on your own If things aren’t going so well, why not make an appointment next time you’re at the centre to speak to a Family Support Worker. Frankie or Lynn are here to discuss your worries and concerns and work with you to set achievable goals that will work towards positive outcomes for you and your child. If you would prefer to telephone for a chat, please call the centre on 395534 or ring the Family Support Workers direct on their mobiles: Frankie (07825 315955), Lynn (07771 520531).

Café Changes A number of parents have asked for changes in the café including a children’s play area, more interesting colourful walls and snacks/lunches to buy. Thank you to all those who have given us feedback – if anyone else has ideas please let us know either by speaking to a member of staff or by writing your ideas on a card and putting them in the red suggestion box in the café (on the wall by the TV screen). We are looking for parents interested in getting involved in painting, planning the new layout, coming up with menus, etc. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer and get involved!
Family Trip to Adventure Wonderland This Christmas instead of having a Christmas Party, we went on a trip to Adventure Wonderland on Tuesday 14th December. 80 children, parents, carers and childminders had a fantastic time. Children got the opportunity to visit Santa in his grotto and received presents. Everyone watched the Cinderella pantomime and visited rabbits and guinea pigs in cuddles corner. Thank you to all staff and families who attended.
Have your say! We want to hear your views on the services and groups at the children’s centre to help us understand how we can improve and what you want us to keep on doing! Do you have any ideas of things you would like to happen at the centre and in the local community? Or would you like to let us know what you have enjoyed attending, or things we could improve… You can do this by: Talking to a member of staff Adding information to our ‘We Love to Listen’ board ( in the Lion King room) Putting your idea in the suggestion box or book available in reception or the café Completing a Parent Satisfaction Survey at www.bournemouth.gov.uk/childrenscentres (click on the ‘Parent Satisfaction Survey’ link half way down the page) Completing a Satisfaction Survey available on reception
Why not try making play dough at home! While it’s cold outside why not make your own play dough and have fun being creative indoors! You will need: 1 cup of water 1 cup of plain flour ½ cup of salt 2 tbsps cream of tartar 2 tbsps vegetable oil A selection of food colourings Use a saucepan. Mix the flour, salt and cream of tartar together. Make a small well in the middle and carefully pour in the water and mix well. Add the oil and a few drops of food colouring and mix again. You can even add glitter! Warm over a medium heat, stirring constantly. Be careful - if you don't stir the mixture enough or have the temperature up too high, the dough will burn easily. When the dough comes away from the sides of the pan and starts to make a ball, remove it from the heat and leave to cool for at least half an hour. Store your play dough in air tight containers in a cool, dry space and it should have a relatively long life! You can also store your play dough in the fridge to try and get the most 'life expectancy' out of it. However, eventually the play dough will be overworked and you'll need to create a new batch.
