Skateboarding is a relatively modern sport, and for the skateboarders we met down at the King’s Park Skatepark it’s become a big part of their lifestyle. Now almost 2 years old the skatepark, featuring ramps, pyramid, fun box, steps, hand rails and a pole jam, is still a popular place for local skateboarders of all abilities to learn and practice new tricks and skills. Skateboarders have long utilized any aspects of their environment to develop the sport. In the 1976 drought Californian skaters made use of empty swimming pools, developing the idea of the bowl and more recently skaters have used street furniture; kerbs, steps and railings and so these too have been incorporated into the King's Park skatepark. The majority of Skateboarders using King’s Park are lads between the ages of 9 - 25 yrs but there are some girls that use the park and one or two ‘over 25’s’ too! Most of the skaterboarders are down at the skatepark every day of the week, for them its somewhere free to go that keeps them off the streets, some even come over from neighbouring Poole. L ocal skaters were key in the development of the park and would now like to develop the facility further, with flood lighting and a possible canopy. It’s not just skateboarders that use the skatepark, BMXing and Inline skating are popular sports here too! Most skateboarders don’t actually take up the sport to keep fit but it’s a great exercise for just about every muscle in the body.
