One of the saddest parts for any die-hard red devil fan would be to watch their team tumble out of every possible tournament. That type of nightmare turned into reality when Man Utd lost to a Champions League spot after they failed to grab the top four spots at the English Premier League. To rub salt on wounds, the defeat resulted because they drew a relatively new name in the league Huddersfield.
Huddersfield relegated with just 14 points, who had lost 22 of their last 24 and scored just nine goals at the John Smith’s Stadium all season. It has now conceded 75 goals this season. Man Utd fans now seem to be living in denial with the reality of realizing that a team led by Sir Alex Fergusson only a few years ago now seems entirely decimated. During the last few days of his stay at Man Utd, their former manager Jose Mourinho reported in a statement that the team would need a ‘miracle’ to end up in the top four this season. Many snickered at his remarks which eventually also cost him his job. Then came along Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and for three months, he seemed to be the miracle worker they required. However, now everyone questions the decision to hand Solskjaer a three-year contract in March.
The Norwegian has bemoaned United’s lack of goals of late and recalled Alexis Sanchez to his starting line-up for the first time in two months in search for more firepower. But the Chilean again failed to live up to his status as the club’s highest earner before limping off just before the hour mark. United were as ragged, as passive and ultimately as poor as they had been in the previous 90. The Champions League will not miss them.
