I am delighted to announce that we have awarded the contract for a brand new GP-led healthcare centre in Boscombe to New Wave Integrated Care, a local consortium comprising Centrepoint, Dorset Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Help and Care and Bournemouth Churches Housing Association.
The new centre will begin operating in July 2009 and will be open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year. As well as offering core general medical services to registered patients, the health centre will also offer a range of additional services such as phlebotomy, minor surgery, cervical screening and other services to meet local need.
The Health Centre will also offer urgent services to unregistered patients. We particularly hope that this centre will encourage those people not already registered with a GP to come forward for NHS care and advice. The Health Centre will temporarily operate from a base on Shelley Road on the Dorset Healthcare Foundation Trust site, before moving to a brand new building in 2011/2012.
We already have excellent GP services in Bournemouth and Poole and this new facility will complement existing services whilst at the same time enabling new ways of working.
There remains a significant programme of work ahead and we will continue to work with local people and partners to ensure that the services delivered by the health centre are the services that local people have told us they want and need.
