Tension between China and US is expected to further disrupt as two navy warships have been sent through Taiwan Straits by the US military. The two warships sent on Sunday are identified as the William P Lawrence and Stethem, which allegedly sailed from south to north through the waterway that divides Taiwan from China, which is also called as Taiwan Straits. The Taiwan Strait is an international waterway which is roughly 180KM wide and separates Taiwan from China. It is considered as a part of South China Sea and borders the East China Sea.
Although there was no immediate reaction from China, it is however expected that this move might further raise tensions between Taiwan and China Relationships. The main objective of the US military to send these warships is to showcase their commitment for a free Indo – Pacific. Taiwan military forces closely monitored the movement and claimed that there were no unsafe interactions reported during the transit. Though there were no formal ties between Taiwan and US, this may be however considered as sign of support by US in the middle of growing friction between Taipei and Beijing. On the other hand, Taiwan supports this movement, mentioning it as a part of strategic Indo-Pacific tasks.
China has been eyeing its territorial claim to the island of Taiwan over the past few years, they have also repeatedly sent aircraft and ships to circle the island, also trying to isolate the island diplomatically by not allowing other nations to interfere. China has also been protesting against foreign militaries to enter the straits as they considered it as their home water. Recently warnings to the French Military to stop their warships entering the Straits were issued, in which China reported the intrusions as illegal. The Government of China also blamed the British Naval for their recent downside relations with Taiwan.
