Volcanic ash cloud causes chaos for Anglo-European College of Chiropractic students

Posted on Tuesday, 20 April 2010 12:37PM by lisa Northover

A total of 130 overseas students from the Bournemouth-based Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) have been unable to start their new term, due to the volcanic ash cloud which has grounded flights to and from the UK.

Around half of the AECC’s 593 full-time, student population come from outside the UK and many returned to their home country during the recent Easter holidays. Term restarted yesterday (Monday 19th April) but nearly a quarter of AECC students were still stuck overseas.

The second eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland occurred on 14 April 2010, with flights to and from the UK being cancelled at midday on the 15 April. There were initial hopes that air space may have re-opened over the weekend, but this has not proven to be the case.

Dedicated AECC students have embarked on various journeys to get them back to Bournemouth over the next few days. A coach load of 42 Norwegian students set off from their home land on Sunday and have travelled via Sweden, Denmark, Germany and France with the hope of reaching Calais today. A second coach of Scandinavian students are looking to catch a ferry from Bergen (Norway) to Newcastle today.

AECC Principal Kenneth Vall has praised the efforts of the college’s students to return to the UK.

This shows great initiative and endeavour by our students.  No one can doubt the dedication to their education here at the AECC and we hope to see them in Bournemouth very soon
